BEIJING, China (CNN) — Chinese officials announced an emergency plan to deal with Beijing’s persistent pollution problem, as thousands of world-class athletes head toward the country for the start of the Olympic Games.

A sign pointing to special Olympic vehicle lanes stands out in the smog on Sunday in Beijing.

A sign pointing to special Olympic vehicle lanes stands out in the smog on Sunday in Beijing.

The plan, announced on Thursday, calls for more factory closings, a complete halt to all construction projects and further reduction of the number of vehicles on the streets at any one time.

The measures would be implemented if forecasters see stagnant weather conditions 48 hours in advance.

The Chinese Environmental Ministry drafted the plan in conjunction with the cities of Beijing and Tianjin and Hebei province.

“Beijing’s air quality is probably not yet up to what the world will be expecting from an Olympic hosting city,” said Lo Szeping of Greenpeace.

Doctors say high levels of pollution can hurt performance, especially for endurance athletes like marathon runners, who breathe in more than 10 times the amount of air an average person does.

“Pollution goes down into the lungs. It can cause inflammation, it can cause people who have asthma to get asthma episodes, and so, generally, it is not very helpful to athletes,” said Malcolm Green of the British Lung

Ethiopian distance runner Haile Gebrselassie, an asthmatic and holder of multiple world records, pulled out of the marathon because of fears for his health.

Jarrod Shoemaker, a U.S. triathlete, says he has already incorporated a mask into his regimen.

“This past year, I wore a mask all the way up to the race and after the race to see if it would work, and I felt perfectly normal, perfectly fine,” he said. “So I definitely think it worked and that’s my plan again for this year.”

A draconian plan announced last week closed down a number of factories, shut down all outdoor construction sites and decreed that drivers could be on the roads based on their license plate number — odd numbers on one day, even numbers the next.

But the plan failed to make a dent, and the air quality got worse, shrouding the capital like a heavy fog, choking people and choking off the sunlight. Video Watch images of the city before and after the July 20 plan »

The emergency plan would close an additional 105 factories in Beijing and more than 106 others outside the city. The plan would further restrict driving by preventing vehicles from being in operation if the last digit of the license plate number corresponds with the day of the month.

The plan would also institute odd/even driving days for Tianjin city. Odd/even driving days would also be put into effect in Hebei province, but only between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Wind and rain helped clear some of the gloomy gray haze on Tuesday, and meteorologists predicted that the Games, which begin on August 8 with the Opening Ceremony, would see cooler temperatures and less hazy skies.

A reading on Wednesday found that Beijing’s pollution levels dropped by more than half over a 24-hour period to 44 on the index, the lowest reading since the July 20 plan took effect, according to The Associated Press. A reading below 50 is considered “good,” AP reported, adding that a cooling wind and some rain helped sweep away pollutants.

“We are still optimistic that during the Olympics we can reduce pollution well below our target thresholds,” said Du Shaozhong of China’s Environment Protection Bureau.

Authorities, however, wanted to take no chances and announced the emergency plan.

The capital and surrounding areas of northeastern China have the world’s worst nitrogen dioxide levels, according to satellite images taken by the European Space Agency in 2005.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the chemical can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, and may cause impaired lung function and increased respiratory infections.

Malaysia’s Anwar may be arrested in the next 48 hours

Posted by Vincent Yeoh on 7-31-2008

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim may be arrested in the next 48 hours, a senior party official said Thursday, saying it is to stop him contesting a by-election.

Anwar has been accused of sodomy, which he denies, saying it is a politically motivated move to stop him challenging the government.

“We will not rule out the possibility of Anwar being arrested. And it looks like they are planning to charge him by Monday,” Tian Chua, Keadilan party’s information chief, told AFP.

“They may arrest him in the next 48 hours. It is aimed to prevent him from contesting in a by-election,” he added.

Anwar scheduled a press conference for 0700 GMT Thursday. Party officials said it is about his by-election plan.

Anwar said Wednesday he will fight a by-election later this year and form a new government despite the sodomy allegation hanging over him.

“There are thousands of criminal cases not properly investigated. Why pursue this with zeal and in an unjust way? Is it because I will participate in a by-election?” Anwar told reporters.

“You want me to withdraw? No. I will continue to pursue the change. Let’s see if they want to charge me,” he said after being interviewed by Islamic sharia enforcement officials over the allegations.

Anwar has said the claims of a young male aide, a repeat of charges that saw him jailed a decade ago before being overturned, have been fabricated to block his plans to topple the coalition that has ruled Malaysia for half a century.

He has demanded that police stop the investigation and called the aide, 23-year-old Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, an “outright liar” who was working with others in power to frame him.

Ex-Google workers launch Internet search rival Cuil

Posted by Vincent Yeoh on 7-30-2008

SAN FRANCISCO: A group of former Google engineers on Monday launched a rival Internet search engine, Cuil, saying it is an improved version of the world’s most popular Web-scouring tool.

Cuil’s founders are taking unabashed aim at their one-time workplace, claiming they out search Google when it comes to depth and breadth on the rapidly expanding Internet.

“The Internet is getting bigger and more disorganised every day,” Cuil’s founders said in a posting on the website that went live Monday at www.cuil.com.

“We’ve developed new architecture and algorithms that can handle the exponential growth of the Internet and organise results that reflect its enormous complexity.”

Cuil says that unlike Google, which reportedly ignores seldom visited or obscure websites in its index, Cuil doesn’t discriminate and has packed 120 billion Internet pages in its index.

“Size matters because many people use the Internet to find information that is of interest to them, even if it’s not popular,” Cuil said.

“Maybe no one phones your grandmother much, but if her friend from the old neighbourhood wants to get in touch, shouldn’t her number be in the book? Cuil lists all the numbers, even the ones that aren’t called much. Because one day someone will need that number.”

Cuil’s founders include former “Googlers” Anna Patterson, Russell Power and Louis Monier. Patterson and Power worked on Google’s “TeraGoogle” search index and Monier specialised in search engine design.

In a seemingly pre-emptive blog posting on Friday, Google software engineers Jesse Alpert and Nissan Hajaj said the company scans more than a trillion web pages and indexes those it believes will be useful to searchers.

“We’re proud to have the most comprehensive index of any search engine, and our goal always has been to index all the world’s data,” Alpert and Hajaj said in the posting.

Google dominates online search with more than 60 per cent of the market and is so popular the company’s name has become a verb.

Analysts believe Google has become so entrenched in culture it will be hard to unseat.

Words from DivineDiary: Will Rival Cuil become one of the leading search engine? Will google afraid of it’ market leadership? We shall see!

BANGKOK: Thailand’s Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to hear new corruption charges against deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra, involving a controversial loan to military-ruled Myanmar.

The case is the second against Thaksin accepted by the court this week, after judges on Monday agreed to consider charges against the billionaire and his aides stemming from a lottery scandal.

In the latest case, military-backed investigators accused the fallen premier of conflict of interest in a loan granted by the Export-Import Bank of Thailand so that Myanmar could buy satellite services from Thaksin’s Shin Satellite.

The investigators claim Thaksin wrongly ordered the Exim Bank to increase a three-billion-baht (US$89.6-million) loan to four billion baht, so that Myanmar’s ruling government could buy more services from ShinSat.

ShinSat is part of the Shin Corp telecom firm, which Thaksin founded. His family sold the company to Singapore investment firm Temasek Holdings in January 2006 in a tax-free deal that prompted street protests leading to the military coup against him.

“The charges submitted by the (investigators) are enough to warrant a hearing. The court decided to take the case,” Judge Panya Suthibodi told the court, setting the first hearing for September 15.

Neither Thaksin nor his lawyer attended the hearing Wednesday.

The case is the latest in the mounting legal challenges against Thaksin. He also faces trial at the Supreme Court for allegedly arranging for his wife to buy a prime chunk of real estate for just one-third its appraised value, while other graft cases are pending.

Bomb attacks in Iraq kill at least 56

Posted by Vincent Yeoh on 7-29-2008

BAGHDAD: Three women bombers blew themselves up on Monday in a crowd of Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad, one of a string of attacks in Iraq that killed at least 56 people, undermining hopes of a drop in violence.

Scores of people were also wounded in the attacks, which came after a relative lull in the sectarian violence that has ravaged Iraq since February 2006, when insurgents blew up a Shiite mosque in the central city of Samarra.

The triple attack in Baghdad killed at least 25 pilgrims as they headed to a holy shrine for a major religious ceremony on the Shiite Muslim calendar that has been marred by bloodshed in the past, security officials said.

Another 27 people died and 126 others were wounded in a suicide bombing during a protest rally in the northern oil city of Kirkuk, and by gunfire in a panicked stampede that followed, local officials said.

Among the dead in Baghdad were women and children, security and hospital officials told AFP, adding that about 70 other people were wounded.

The violence was condemned by the White House.

“The United States condemns the violent attacks on innocent Iraqis,” National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

“We urge the Iraqi people and government to respond with calm determination to the threat from violent extremists who seek to destabilise the country.”

The bombers struck in the Karrada district of central Baghdad as pilgrims were making their way on foot towards Kadhimiyah in the north of the city, site of a Shiite festival on Tuesday.

“At least 25 people were killed and more than 70 were wounded in three suicide attacks, probably by female suicide bombers,” a police official said.

On Sunday, gunmen shot dead seven pilgrims in Madin, a town south of Baghdad, despite tight security for Tuesday’s ceremony honouring revered imam Mussa Kadhim that is expected to attract up to one million worshippers.

Pilgrims from around the country are flocking to Baghdad to mourn the revered imam who died 12 centuries ago, prompting authorities to step up security amid concern over attacks.

Systematic violence - suicide bombings and sectarian killings - has dropped sharply in the capital since a peak in 2006, but police fear a wave of attacks in the city of six million people.

Major General Qassim Atta, spokesman for city security, told reporters that his force had information that this year’s pilgrims may be targeted.

“We ask people to help in all ways with our security forces,” Atta said, adding that up to one million people were expected.

Checks have been particularly stringent amid what appears to be growing trend of using women in insurgent bombings, which have claimed hundreds of lives across the volatile country.

The attack in Kirkuk targeted a crowd of people who were protesting against a controversial provincial election law, police said.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosives amid the crowd, causing a stampede which prompted guards to open fire, officials said.

“The victims were people who ran away after the explosion, and guards opened fire, shooting into the air,” said Najat Hassam, a senior member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

“More people then responded to the gunfire with more shooting.”

Kirkuk is often the scene of communal tensions among Kurds, Arabs and Turkmens, and the latest violence was sparked by protests over the controversial legislation for planned provincial elections.

The draft bill is currently being reviewed by the Iraqi parliament but many Kurdish and Shiite ministers oppose it.

Kurds in particular are worried that the law will fail to address issues on how the provincial council of Kirkuk should be constituted.

The question is important to them because it could affect ownership of the northern province’s oil resources, claimed by both Arabs and Kurds.

Meanwhile a key Sunni political party sought to distance itself from the violence in Kirkuk. Sunnis have often been linked to the Al-Qaeda insurgency.

“This criminal act came at a sensitive and critical time when discussions about the destiny of the Kirkuk have been in focus,” the Iraqi Islamic Party of Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi said. “We condemn the act.”

Another three men and a woman were killed on Monday in a roadside bombing near Baquba north of Baghdad, police said

Ready for the RPG renaissance - Diablo III

Posted by Vincent Yeoh on 7-29-2008

SINGAPORE: There was a time when my brother would look over my shoulder at my terminal and exclaim: “You’re still playing this game?”

The year was 1998. The game was Diablo. Now, role-playing game (RPG) aficionados the world over can celebrate, as Diablo III has finally been announced.

Diablo, released in 1996 by Blizzard, is the definitive game many credited for resurrecting the then dire RPG genre. Its addictive hack-and-slash gameplay, simple controls, stupendous cut scenes, varied character development, immersive story and superb replayability on multi-player Battle.net make the third-person title the irrefutable game of the year.

It was a rare gem at a time when the electronic gaming market was dominated by action and first-person shooter (FPS) games. And who can blame gamers if all they want is to load a game and start firing on all cylinders?

In RPGs, you start out poor and weak. You have to kill beasts after beasts and complete quests after quests to gain experience and level up. Then you will be strong enough to wipe out all your foes to save the world. To some gamers, it is an arduous process that they loathe. To RPG fans like myself, that is part of the process that advances the storyline, which propels me to continue playing.

While there have been many solid RPG series before 1996, such as Ultima and Wizardry, no other game has brought the RPG genre so much attention. Many RPG purists criticised the action-oriented gameplay of Diablo, claiming it to be no more than a shallow action game with puny RPG elements. Diablo was admittedly what started the “action RPG” genre but I believe it is precisely the action element that brought millions of gamers into the RPG arena.

Diablo raised the profile of RPGs. Ask any gamer if he has played Diablo in the late 90s and the answer is likely a resounding “Yes”, from real-time strategy (RTS) players to FPS players.

It is no wonder that other developers soon jumped on the bandwagon, spawning Diablo clones like Darkstone, Dungeon Siege and Nox as fast as the demons in the Diablo dungeons.

Diablo ushered in an era of excellent classic RPGs between 1997 and 1999, including several of my favourites like Fallout, Baldur’s Gate and Planescape Torment. There is also the stunning first-person RPG, Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.

In 2000, Diablo II was released amid rave reviews, and an expansion pack Lord of Destruction was released a year later. Other classic RPGs that shipped around that time included Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, its expansion Throne of Bhaal and the combat-oriented Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter.

Then, suddenly, the bandwagon came to a stop. The RPG engine ran out of fuel and stopped sputtering out games.

It is hard to pinpoint why developers’ focus abruptly switched from RPG to pure action. It could be due to the fact that some Diablo clones were total flops (like Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader), and developers had to move on to other more lucrative projects.

In addition, with more gamers switching to consoles where action and FPS games thrive, quality RPGs were hard to come by, except for the evergreen Final Fantasy series and a few other Japanese titles.

And with the proliferation of online gaming, the massively multiplayer online RPG (MMORPG) genre emerged. MMORPG requires developers to invest huge amounts of time and money but the financial rewards can be massive, thanks to the monthly subscription business model. Examples of stellar MMORPGs are Lineage, Everquest and World of Warcraft.

But I believe that there are many who still prefer a solid single-player RPG experience compared to the constant menaces of player-killing online. After an excruciating eight-year wait, we finally have official word of Diablo III’s existence. It appears that it has been in development for three to four years. And looking at the stunning gameplay video, Diablo III looks set to spark another RPG renaissance.

But given Blizzard’s record of delaying games until they are polished to perfection, you might have to wait a while before you can grab the Diablo III box off the shelves.

Thankfully and astonishingly, there is a nice line-up of RPG games coming this fall to appease the appetites of RPG addicts.

On top of my buy list is the post-apocalyptic RPG game, Fallout 3. The turn-based combat of the old series has been replaced with hybrid turn-based and real-time combat, and you can even switch between first-person and third-person views.

If you want an outright Diablo clone, there is Sacred 2: Fallen Angels coming up in the horizon. If you prefer more action, look out for the two Xbox 360 exclusives — Fable 2 and Too Human. And if you want something closer to Diablo III but with a Greek mythology twist, Rise of the Argonauts is the title you should be looking at. You play Jason, the Greek King, in search for the golden fleece, an artifact that can resurrect your beloved assassinated wife. Along the way, you recruit the Argonauts, including legendary characters like Hercules and Achilles, to aid you in your quest.

With such a vast array of RPG titles waiting to be unleashed, let the RPG renaissance begin. -

SINGAPORE: Singapore investment firm Temasek Holdings has pumped in an additional US$900 million (S$1.2 billion) in Merrill Lynch as part of the United States broker’s latest capital-raising effort.

Temasek Holdings said it has committed US$3.4 billion in the public offering by Merrill Lynch in a statement on Tuesday.

Said Myrna Thomas, Managing Director, Corporate Affairs, Temasek Holdings: “Temasek confirms its commitment of US$3.4 billion in the Public Offering by Merrill Lynch, a portion of which is subject to regulatory approval.

“The commitment includes a sum of US$2.5 billion arising from a reset payment which Merrill Lynch has agreed to pay to Temasek as an adjustment to the price of Temasek’s original investment made in December 2007.”

The announcement came in the wake of Merrill’s July 17 report that it had racked up a net loss of US$4.89 billion for the second quarter, another sign of the devastation of the US real estate crash on financial markets.

The tarnished Wall Street star said Monday it was selling off a large amount of asset-backed collateralized debt obligations (CDO) — the packaged US mortgage securities which have ravaged bank balance sheets around the world.

The move took US$11.1 billion off of its books, but only after scoring a huge loss on the sale. Merrill said the CDOs had a face value of US$30.6 billion and were sold to Lone Star Funds, a specialist in distressed assets, for just US$6.7 billion.

“The sale of the substantial majority of our CDO positions represents a significant milestone in our risk reduction efforts,” said Merrill chairman and CEO John Thain in a statement.

Thain said the CDO sale and the capital hike will “materially enhance the company’s capital position and financial flexibility going forward.”

The company said Monday it expects to record a pre-tax write-down in the third quarter of about US$5.7 billion, which includes a US$4.4 billion loss on the CDOs being sold.

Merrill had already raised US$15.3 billion from capital markets earlier this year, including share sales to Temasek.

Temasek’s earlier investment though came with a requirement that if Merrill raised more capital within 12 months at a price lower that the US$48 that the Singapore fund paid, it would be compensated for the difference.

Tuesday’s announcement meant that Merrill has to pay Temasek US$2.5 billion — which Temasek is turning around to put back into Merrill, along with another US$900 million.

Merrill’s new fundraising comes on the heels of announcements earlier in July that it was shedding assets to raise new funds, including its 20 per cent stake in financial news and data group Bloomberg for US$4.4 billion, and its controlling interest in Financial Data Services for at least US$3.5 billion.

In its second-quarter report it also wrote down over US$9 billion in soured investments, largely linked to bets on US mortgage investments that have been hit by a horrific housing slump after years of sizzling growth.

Merrill’s shares plunged 11.6 per cent Monday ahead of the news, falling US$3.19 to close at US$24.33.

SM Goh confident PAP will eventually win back Hougang

Posted by Vincent Yeoh on 7-27-2008

SINGAPORE : Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has said Singapore’s political system should facilitate the emergence of a strong, effective government after every election and a responsible, constructive opposition.

Mr Goh was speaking at the National Day Dinner of the opposition-held ward of Hougang on Saturday.

His key message at the dinner was that the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) must continue to produce results which make people’s lives better.

He also said the PAP must never lose the people’s trust as this is the ruling party’s recipe for the continued success of Singapore.

Mr Goh said that is why he is confident of eventually winning Hougang back from the opposition.

Mr Goh was in the thick of action in the opposition-held ward of Hougang during the last general election in 2006.

Returning for this year’s National Day celebrations, Mr Goh noted that the opposition parliamentarian for the area since 1991, Low Thia Khiang, believes his job is just to ask questions and check the ruling party, but not to offer solutions to problems.

Mr Goh said this is a rather narrow view of the role of an opposition. And the Senior Minister has thrown a challenge to the advisor and grassroots leaders of the Hougang division - to keep its incumbent Mr Low on his toes.

Mr Goh said, “Amongst the things you can do… I suggest you study the annual accounts of the town council to ensure that the funds are properly used. Check whether the arrears for S&C (service and conservancy) charges are piling up, and eating into their reserves. Make sure that enough money is put aside for cyclical maintenance.

“In your walkabouts, check on the estate maintenance. If Mr Low has done a good job, give him credit for it. If there are deficiencies, point them out to the residents. In short, play the role of an effective opposition in Hougang.”

He noted, “Eventually, I believe we will win Hougang back, but whether we do or not, I think (we should) serve the people. That’s what we are here for.”

Mr Goh noted that the people living in the opposition ward know that they have benefited from government policies. But many also think that there should be an opposition to keep the ruling party on its toes.

The Senior Minister said, “Ideally, our political system should facilitate the emergence of a strong, effective government after every election and a responsible, constructive opposition.

“But no matter how you design it, there is no guarantee, because it depends on whether good, honest and competent people come forward to stand for elections and the wisdom of the electorate when they cast their ballot.

“So there’s a natural tendency - which I can appreciate of some people wanting to have a voice, not belonging to the party, not belonging to the PAP - to check and balance the PAP. That’s understandable because people want to debate issues, they want to have their views expressed in Parliament.”

So Mr Goh said the ruling party’s primary task before the next election, which is due by 2011, is to look for good candidates.

He said, “In India, the world’s largest democracy, several criminals have been elected into Parliament and some are serving jail terms, including one convicted murderer who is waiting for his appeal to be heard.

“But recently, they were brought out to vote because a confidence motion on the government was hanging in the balance. They were of course then returned to jail. But can you imagine MPs with criminal records holding the future of Singapore in their hands?”

So the Senior Minister hopes the opposition too would look for good candidates so voters will be given a real choice.

Words from DivineDiary.com: Sometime, it’s really hard to understand those politicians mindset, its really so important on who’s in charge of which areas? Currently, isn’t we all still peacefully living on our live? Even HG is not under PAP. So does it mean that PAP once win over HG, our life gonna be better? No one know about it? Hence why not focus on how to upgrade the living standard of singaporean instead of thinking and cracking your mind on how to win that piece of land back. Btw, singapore going to celebrate the birthday again, and hopefully nothing gonna happen on the day itself.

Each block also has an xml metadata file that describes what the block does. You can find built-in tutorials on how to build blocks directly in Popfly.

Q How can I create my own custom block?

A You can create blocks by selecting Create a Block from the Create Stuff menu on the Popfly web site or by creating a new Popfly Block project in Visual Studio. You will need to install Popfly Explorer to be able to create a block in Visual Web Developer. Then read the block building guide which includes the source code for several blocks. Or you can just rip an existing block to see how others have done it.

Q How do I create custom blocks from data services that require passwords or developer keys?

A Because of the potential for abuse, we do not allow users to create custom blocks that require passwords or developer keys. If you have a secure data service you want implemented as a block, contact us at wepopfly@nospam.microsoft.com (remove the nospam).

Q Can I create server-side applications using ASP.NET with Popfly?

A No, Popfly applications run on the client Web browser and are not designed for server-side processing. For server-side applications, you can use an ASP.NET hosting company.

Q As a Visual Studio user, can I deploy a Windows ClickOnce application or a XBAP application using Popfly?

A Not at this time, we are investigating adding support for this scenario in the future. For now, users can only share the source code for projects using Popfly Explorer.

Q As a Visual Web Developer user, can I deploy a client-only Web application using Popfly?

A Yes, you can easily do this by creating a Popfly Web Site project, which becomes available in Visual Studio after you installed Popfly Explorer.

Q How can I build a custom, client-only, Web application written in HTML, CSS, JavaScript or Silverlight using Popfly?

A You can create a single web page on the Popfly Website when you go to the Popfly Mashup Creator and select Add Custom HTML and simply copy and paste your code into the designer window. You can create an entire web site by creating a Popfly Web Site project which becomes available in Visual Web Developer after you installed Popfly Explorer.

Q Does Popfly Explorer support source control, branching and versions?

A No, we don’t want to replace the many existing source control tools available today. In the future we will add support to migrate your Popfly Visual Studio projects to CodePlex, which does offer source control functionality.

Q Do you support Silverlight 2.0 code?

A Not at this time, but we are investigating adding Silverlight 2.0 support .

Q Can I use 3rd party JavaScript or AJAX libraries for my projects using Popfly?

A Yes, so long as the libraries do not use server-side code and that the library license does not violate the Terms of Use.

Q Can I create multiple pages using the Popfly Page Designer?

A Yes, you can create a web site by creating a Popfly Web Site project in Visual Web Developer, which becomes available after you install Popfly Explorer.

Q Can I upload resource files like photos, videos, code snippets, etc to Popfly?

A Not at this time.

Q Does the Mashup Designer have any built-in support for any Ajax Libraries?

A Yes, the Mashup Designer has built-in support for the ASP.NET AJAX client library that can be used both in custom blocks and in mashups.

Q Does Popfly have any debugging support?

A Popfly Explorer provides users with debugging support from within Visual Web Developer for block and Popfly Web Site creators. Mashup creators can view a console as your mashup is making network calls, but that is about the extent of it today.

Q How do you handle cross-domain calls from JavaScript?

A We use a custom JavaScript class named environment which abstracts the cross-domain calls. It exposes two methods for retrieving data: getXml(url) and getText(url).

Q Is there a way for me to capture and store data from my application, say by creating a “voting” application that lets people vote on choices?

A Yes, Popfly includes a very rudimentary data storage mechanism that provides the equivalent of including anonymous comments for your content. You can use this programmatically by calling environment.loadAnonymousData() and environment.addAnonymousData(). We are working to provide blocks for more robust data services from 3rd party data storage providers in the future.

Try Microsoft Popfly Now!

Words from DivineDiary.com: I had tested out the program and it look pretty cool, fun to play with or you can use it to kill your extra free time, but for serious web developer, it will still be good for you to stick to Adobe!

Microsoft IE8 Download

Overview

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 (Developer Preview)

Welcome to the website for Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1. Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 is a developer preview for web designers and developers to help prepare their websites for the launch of Internet Explorer 8. Some of the new features designed for developers include a developer toolbar and improved interoperability and compatibility.

Internet Explorer 8 is designed to work in standard mode out of this box. However, Microsoft provides a way for users to browse the web in a way similar to Internet Explorer 7 by using the emulate Internet Explorer 7 button on the chrome. Learn more.

The web at your service

Internet Explorer 8 will take the web experience beyond the page. Internet Explorer 8 introduces a new way to seamlessly experience the best of the web whether you are a web developer writing to standards or a user discovering a new online service. Be one of the first developers to take advantage of improvements in Internet Explorer 8 for your websites and applications. Learn more.

Demos:

These videos are designed to help web developers and designers get started experiencing the power of the web using Internet Explorer 8. Learn how to debug faster and more efficiently using built-in developer tools, how to use new AJAX features such as DOM storage and AJAX navigation to deliver dynamic user experiences, and how to reach beyond the webpage and your website with Activities and WebSlices.

See more demo videos in the Internet Explorer Developer Center.

Features:

Over the last ten years, the intensity of web usage and people’s reliance on the web has increased dramatically. The evolution of the web has introduced a new set of opportunities, immersive experiences, online services, and standards. Daily life without the web is simply hard for many people to imagine.

With this intensity and reliance, web developers and designers face an evolving set of needs including:

  • Interoperability and compatibility
  • Built-in tools that help both first time and experienced developers and designers get pages built right
  • Browser capabilities that enable innovative experiences

Internet Explorer 8 will take the web experience beyond the page and introduce a new way to seamlessly experience the best of the web, whether you are a web developer writing to standards or a user discovering a new online service.

Faster, Easier

Choice of layout engine

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 will ship in standards mode by default. However, users can set three different rendering modes using the X-UA-Compatible header:

  • Quirks mode which supports Internet Explorer 5 and legacy browsers
  • Strict mode which supports Internet Explorer 7 and is accessed through the emulate IE 7 button
  • Internet Explorer 8 standards mode

Cascading style sheets 2.1 compliance

The Internet Explorer 8 layout engine is built to be cascading style sheets 2.1 compliant, enabling web developers and designers to write their pages once and have them render properly across all cascading style sheets 2.1 compatible browsers. However, Microsoft is not finished—hence, Microsoft is seeking feedback from developers working with Internet Explorer 8 Developer Beta 1.

HTML improvements

Many cross-browser inconsistencies have been fixed in Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, including:

  • Separate URL handing for attributes.
  • The get/set/remove attribute implementations are now compatible with those of other browsers.
  • Default attributes for HTML are supported so that they always exist on elements whether specified in the markup or not.

Improved namespace support

Internet Explorer 8 simplifies the use of standards-compliant XML-based webpages that support namespace features like scalable vector graphics, XML user interface language, mathematical markup language, and others.

Platform performance improvements

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 improves performance in many Internet Explorer subsystems, such as the HTML parser, cascading style sheets rule processing, markup tree manipulation, the JScript parser, garbage collector runtime, and memory management. More performance work is planned for later beta releases.

Developer tools

Microsoft has heard your feedback that Internet Explorer needs its own built-in Developer Tools, so the new Developer Toolbar enables developers to quickly debug HTML, cascading style sheets, and JavaScript in a visual development environment that is included with the web browser. Developers can quickly identify and resolve issues because of the deep insight the tool provides into the Document Object Model. The Developer Toolbar also allows the layout to be changed on the fly so that each rendering scenario can be tested thoroughly.

Words from DivineDiary: Dear Reader, please note that this version is only recommended for Developer and also Programmer, casual user is not recommended to download this version, as it is still under BETA Stage.

Wire in food and poor service mar dining experience

Posted by Vincent Yeoh on 7-27-2008

A STOMPer is greatly upset at the service he encountered at a Japanese restaurant recently when he went there for his hotpot dinner.

According to the STOMPer, his dining experience was marred by several incidents, starting with the waitress having taken the wrong orders and ‘begging’ him to take the wrongly-ordered items, to his finding a metal wire in his food.

Although the restaurant manager was apologetic about the second incident and offered the contributor a 10 per cent discount, he felt it was ‘not that big a deal’.

He is also unhappy that customers are charged for wet towels, which he feels should not be done unless they explicitly stated they wanted one.

Said Lawrence, in an email to STOMP on July 26:

“I was at Sushi Tei Vivo City on 25 July 08 at 9 plus. T

“There was a a metal twig embedded in the cabbage that came with the paper hot pot.

“The manager was alerted. She offered a replacement, and a 10% discount that seems such a big deal to them or should be a big deal to me.

“I have no appetite for any replacement and she removed the barely touched hot pot. She informed that she would feedback to the kitchen.

“When the bill was presented, the waitress reminded us that 10% discount was given. Was 10% discount such a big deal to customer who nearly swallowed a metal twig?

“(And there was a )2nd issue. Consumers should be rightfully charged with items that they ordered and consumed. Without anyone realising, Sushi Tei charges each diner 20ct for the wet towel placed on the table.
There was no refund even if it was left untouched. Can they charge diners secretly without informing them?

“(Also,) the Waiter/Waitress took down wrong orders. It was a busy day as usual at Sushi Tei.
“The waitress at Sushi Tei who took the wrong order begged us to accept the food that we did not order, and refused to take it off the bill. Is this their practice? When I informed the manager, she did not do anything about it.”

STOMP Is contacting the restaurant for a comment. Watch this space for updates.

Words from DivineDiary: This actually teach us a lesson that, even top restaurant also have service/hygiene problems. Does not means that we pay the additional dollars and we gonna get assured that the food is top quality. Hence, guys we may start considering those cheap food court while they having food which is clean and good!

Barring some unlikely bolt of inspiration at Microsoft, Google should continue to pad its already formidable lead in search advertising. And now that Google CEO Eric Schmidt says the company intends to turn its attention to display ads, who of sane mind would bet against its chances?

We’re still quite a way from the point where regulators conclude that Google is too big for its britches, but just for fun, I typed the question, “Is Google a monopoly?” into my search engine. (Wanna guess which search engine I use?) My query brought back 461,000 responses. Clearly, people have debated this question for quite some time, even as the company continues to grow ever larger.

But Google obviously doesn’t agree that size and market dominance pose even remote antitrust parallels with IBM in the 1960s or Microsoft in the 1990s. The chief reason: the markets in question are very different. Earlier Friday, Google’s general counsel, Kent Walker, and Dana Wagner, the U.S. competition counsel, got on the phone to explain why.

Kent Walker, VP and General Counsel

(Credit: Google)

“The nature of the Internet is just a fundamentally different world from the sale of packaged software or the bundling of software with OEMs (original equipment manufacturers),” said Walker, “The standard line we have is that competition is just one click away,”

Walker offered what he called both a “structural” answer as well as the “behavioral” answer.

Listen now:

I agreed with much of his argument. The parallels with Microsoft are off. In Microsoft’s case, the company got into trouble because it used its desktop monopoly to force companies to adopt Internet Explorer. Still, is there not a point –call it 70 percent market share or 90 percent market share, or somewhere in between–where Google opens itself to the title of monopolist, even if it got there by virtue of building a better mousetrap? Wagner took a crack at that question, countering that the magic number fascination “was a little bit of a red herring.”

Listen now:

Google does acknowledge its role as a “disruptive company,” but Walker suggests that the real battle is between desktop-based computing, including operating systems and productivity applications, and cloud-based computing. To the degree the latter trend emerges, he said, that spells trouble for Microsoft. “In a sense that’s the real market, if you will,” he said. “It’s how do people use technology to do what they need to do. That can be search to find things more broadly on the Internet. But more broadly, it’s to use the Internet, to use the network to share information to create new goods, tools and services.”

Listen now:

But will advertisers see their rates go up as a result of the Yahoo-Google search deal? There have been reports suggesting as much. And of course, one of the filters regulators use for antitrust review is to what extent it hurts customers, or, in this case, advertisers. Not surprisingly, Wagner argues that advertisers’ costs will head in the opposite direction.

Listen now:

Since antitrust decisions get decided in Washington, it’s not surprising, then, to learn that lobbyists for Google and its rivals are shadowing each other in the corridors of power. Google’s Walker suggests that most of the noise around competition issues is being generated by competitors like Microsoft–but also the cable and phone companies who don’t like Google’s position regarding Net neutrality.
